Linux Skills Are Hot in an Improving IT Hiring Front

CTS 2301 Notices

CTS 2301 Syllabus

From Article By Katherine Noyes, PCWorld

(01/24/11)
The hiring environment for information technology (IT)
professionals last year was the best it's been since 2000,
according to a recent Challenger, Gray & Christmas report,
indicating that the technology industry has been more
resilient than most during the weak economy. "These firms
are definitely on the leading edge of the recovery, as
companies across the country and around the globe begin
to upgrade and reinvest in their technology," says
Challenger, Gray & Christmas CEO John A. Challenger.
The proliferation of smartphones and tablets has played a
large part in keeping the tech industry thriving. Forrester
Research predicts that 2011 technology spending will increase
7.5 percent in the U.S. and 7.1 percent globally. Skills in
Linux are in particular demand, according to Dice research.
"More and more devices and systems and services are built
based on Linux, and therefore, more and more manufacturers
and vendors are looking for Linux talent," says Intel's Dirk
Hohndel. Linux professionals also tend to get as much as
10 percent more in salary than other IT workers, according
to Dice.

CTS 2301 Syllabus

From Article By Nathan Eddy, in eWeek

(02/07/11)
Information technology-related (IT) jobs
experienced a net gain of 11,800 in January, the eighth straight
month of positive growth, according to the U.S. Department of
Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. Five bellwether
IT job segments had a net gain of 74,200
jobs over the past 12 months, led by management and technical
consulting services and computer systems design and related
services segments, which together accounted for close to
95 percent of all new IT jobs. Foote
Partners CEO David Foote says the
government defines the IT professional
narrowly, recognizing just 21 job titles, which are all
traditional infrastructure jobs in systems analysis, programming,
data communications and networks, tech support, and database
administration. "The role of technology in the enterprise is now
so pervasive that managing it is no longer entrusted to one group
but instead split among every department, function, line of business
and product group," Foote says. "The job of each one of these
entities is to determine how to make the best use of information
technology for producing revenues and profitability, building
market share, ensuring satisfied customers, controlling costs,
innovating solutions, and generally to stay competitive in their
industries."

is a screencast of a Fedora 16 installation on a VMware virtual machine.
In addition, by popular demand, my lecture notes on computer busses is
also available (see the resource "Computer Bus Info").
